Day 3- Mood Established Through Color

Color has the greatest effect on the mood of a room. Today we will learn about the psychology of color and how we can apply color in a room to establish a certain mood, as well as color schemes.

Color Psychology

Red is perfect for any room that you want to draw great attention. Red is often the color the eye looks at first. Red is associated with energy, excitement, power and movement.

Orange is the most flamboyant of all the colors on the color wheel. It is associated with happiness, energy, warmth, and ambition.

Yellow is the color associated with happiness, good times, and cheerfulness. A person surrounded by yellow feels optimistic because the brain actually releases more seratonin (feel good chemical in the brain) when around this color.

Green is the color of growth, nature and serenity. It is the traditional color of peace, harmony, comfortable nurturing, support and well paced energy. Dark green is associated as being rich, wealthy, and masculine; whereas light green is soothing and airy.

Blue makes up most of the world around us and is associated as being calm and serene. Blue has been known to promote focus because of its calming effects.

Purple is the color of richness, sophistication, and prosperity. The popularity of purple has risen within the past few years and is seen quite often in warm, grayed hues. Purple possesses both warm and cooler qualities making it a color of warmth and serenity.

Color Schemes

Analogous color schemes are made up of two or more colors that are adjacent to one another on the color wheel.

Complimentary color schemes are made up of two colors across from each other on the color wheel.

Monochromatic color schemes are made up of one color in varying tints and hues.
In this picture, the varying shades of brown make up the monochromatic scheme.

Split complimentary schemes are made up of three different colors equal distance from each other on the color wheel. In this case, the split complimentary scheme is red, blue, and yellow.
